A Legacy of Trust and Resilience

125 YEARS OF OUR HERITAGE

As the business started to grow, Ganpat Pasu brought his eldest son, Khimji Ganpat, into the fold. At just 17, Khimji joined his father in the efforts to expand the business. Their combined efforts began to shape the Group’s future, laying the groundwork for further success.

Unfortunately, Khimji Ganpat passed away at the age of 35, just as the business was on the cusp of significant growth.

Though his untimely demise was a difficult moment for the family and the business, the strong foundation they built together allowed the Group to survive during the difficult times.

In 1899, Ganpat Pasu, a man of humble origins from the Kutch region of Gujarat, travelled to Mumbai, a bustling metropolis that promised opportunity but offered no guarantees.

In the face of an unpredictable economic and political landscape, Ganpat Pasu's bold decision to enter the agricultural trading business laid the foundation for what would become a legacy.

His foresight and spirit allowed him to establish the business that not only survived but thrived through the decades.

Ganpat Pasu

Following the untimely passing of Khimji Ganpat, the responsibility of the family business fell to his elder son, Khushalchand Khimji. At just 12 years of age, Khushalchand was called upon by his grandfather to join the business and complete his education in Mumbai.

He stepped into the company’s fold just after World War II, during a time when the world was recovering, and India was on the brink of independence.

Despite his young age, Khushalchand proved to be sharp and capable, guiding the company through the challenging times that followed India’s independence.

Under his leadership, the Group entered a significant growth phase.

The business expanded into new markets, introduced new products, and forged strong partnerships. A composed man, Khushalchand was instrumental in building a network that connected farmers, millers, suppliers, brokers, freight forwarders, warehousing facilities, labourers, and others in the supply chain.

His belief in inclusivity of all stakeholders was one of the crucial aspects for the progress of the Group and its people. This approach fostered a culture of trust, loyalty, honesty, and a strong commitment to quality.

Khushalchand’s leadership not only expanded the company but also built a community, navigating through the complexities of a rapidly changing world.

In 1988, Khushalchand, who had become the driving force behind Ganpat Pasu & Co., after his grandfather's passing, rebranded the company as Khushalchand Khimji & Co.

While the business evolved, the core values, ethics, and principles that Khushalchand had embraced throughout his life remained unchanged, continuing to guide the company’s philosophy and operations.

This rebranding came at a pivotal moment, as India was on the cusp of economic transformation.

The liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991 opened new opportunities and markets, and Khushalchand Khimji & Co was well-positioned to seize them.

The company embarked on a new period of growth, expanding its reach and exploring fresh prospects.
